MADISON, N.J. – The William Paterson swimming teams earned a pair of victories at Drew Nov. 3. The Pioneer men (1-1) won by a score of 103-76, while the Pioneer women (2-1) triumphed, 109-84, as William Paterson won every event against the Rangers.
Sophomore Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) was a double winner, touching first in the 200 free (1:54.68) and 100 back (1:00.02). Junior David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) won the 500 (5:18.37) and 1,000 (10:57.41) frees, while freshman Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) finished first in the 50 (22.87) and 100 (51.77) frees. Sophomore Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was victorious in the 200 IM (2:11.92) and 100 breast (1:05.13), and sophomore Danny Lynch (Rockaway, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was the winner in the 100 fly (1:02.09).
Three Pioneer women were double winners -- freshman Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) in the 500 (5:53.9) and 1,000 (12:11.13) frees, junior Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) in the 50 (25.95) and 100 (56.74) frees, and classmate Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton) in the 200 IM (2:27.29) and 100 breast (1:14.69). Junior Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) touched first in the 100 back (1:04.41), junior Donivyn Schmidt (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) placed first in the 200 free (2:12.44), and senior Nicole Szakacs (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) won the 100 fly (1:08.43). In addition, the 200 medley relay team of McKay, Rotondo, Szakacs and Hartwell posted a winning time of 1:57.58.
The Pioneers will next compete at SUNY Maritime Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 6:00 p.m.
