Pioneers Defeat Baruch, Mills

WAYNE , N.J. – The William Paterson men's and women's swimming and diving teams improved to 3-1 and 5-1, respectively, with home victories against Baruch and Mills Nov. 10.

The Pioneer men defeated Baruch, 107-90. Sophomore Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was one of five double winners for the Pioneers, earning first-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:10.06) and the 100 breast (1:05.23). Senior Sean Davenport Highland Lakes, N.J./Vernin Twp.) won the one-meter (170.10) and three-meter (191.40) dives, while junior David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) touched first in the 500 (5:18.06) and 1,000 (11:09.04) frees. Sophomore Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) finished first in the 200 free (1:57.39) and 100 back (1:01.32), and freshman Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) won the 50 (23.51) and 100 (53.01) frees. The 200 free relay team of Karas, Caputo, Brian Fisher (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) and Seftel also earned a victory with a time of 1:36.18.

The Pioneer women defeated both Baruch and Mills by identical 57-33 scores. Junior Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) was a double winner, touching first in the 50 (26.17) and 100 (57.63) frees. Freshman Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) placed first in the 500 (5:53.08) and 1,000 (12:00.79) frees, and sophomore Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) won the one-meter (177.15) and three-meter (172.05) dives. Junior Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton) was the winner of the 200 IM (2:28.50), junior Donivyn Schmidt (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) finished first in the 200 free (2:10.39), senior Nicole Szakacs (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) won the 100 fly (1:09.25), and junior Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) was victorious in the 100 back (1:04.82). The 200 medley relay team of McKay, Rotondo, Szakacs and Hartwell won with a time of 1:59.85, and the 200 free relay team of McKay, Schmidt, Rotondo and Tara Graham (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) posted a winning time of 1:52.02.

The Pioneers will return to action Thursday, Nov. 15, at home against Lehman at 7:00 p.m.
