READING, Pa. – William Paterson (8-4) scored a tie-breaking goal in the 49th minute and held off late pressure from Alvernia College (9-3) in a 2-1 win Oct. 6 in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 18th minute when sophomore
Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) finished an
Amber Scott (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) from the left post, and William Paterson held that 1-0 lead through the halftime break. Alvernia, which saw an eight-game winning streak come to an end, dominated the early parts of the second half until finally netting the equalizer on a penalty corner when Amber Landis snuck home a pass from Lynsey Treadwell in the 43rd minute.
WPU regained the lead six minutes later. Winkelspecht tallied her second of the game, deflecting a
Jodi Feriod (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) pass. Pioneer goalie
Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) stymied the Alvernia offense, making seven saves on the day, none bigger than a pad stop on a drive off the stick of Janelle Lynch in the final minutes of play.
Alvernia held decisive advantages in shots (13-6) and corners (12-1), but couldn't find the equalizer.
William Paterson will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Kean at 7:30 p.m.
