WAYNE, N.J. (SEPTEMBER 30, 2006) – William Paterson (5-4-1, 2-2-1 NJAC) very nearly handed the No. 10 Rowan women's soccer team (9-0-1, 3-0-1 NJAC) its first loss of the season Sept. 30, but had to settle for a 2-2 double-overtime draw at Pioneer Soccer Park.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a corner kick goal by
Annie Willman (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth) in the 19th minute and an unassisted strike by
Melissa Boka (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) in the 44 th minute.
However, the Profs would not go away quietly, pushing forward in an effort to get on the scoreboard. That strategy paid dividends, as Karen Patruno found the back of the net with 16 minutes remaining in the contest, and Krista Verzi knocked in the equalizer with 1:25 on the clock to force overtime. Both teams had scoring chances during the extra time, but neither side could cash in and the match resulted in a tie.
Lone WPU goalkeeper
Caitlin Kiernan (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) was again forced to the sideline due to an injury, but freshman forward
Jessica Reibis (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) proved herself up to the challenge, making six saves for the Pioneers. The Profs entered the match ranked 10th in the most recent d3kicks.com National Poll.
“I thought that we played extremely well today,” said 10 th-year head coach
Keith Woods. “I'm a little disappointed that we did not come out with the victory, but I think this puts us on the right track to make the conference playoffs. Overall, our team really fought hard for 110 minutes today.
