Gurka Earns 250th Men's Victory at Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. (NOVEMBER 16, 2006) - William Paterson swimming and diving coach Ed Gurka earned his 250th victory as the men's coach as the Pioneer men (4-1) and women (5-1) defeated Lehman Nov. 16.

With the victories, Gurka improved to 250-136 as the WPU men's coach, and 265-134-3 as the women's mentor, for an overall record of 515-270-3 in his 31st season.

The WPU men were victorious, 117-74. Freshman Joe Shirrman (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) won the 50 (22.89) and 100 (51.00) frees, while classmate Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Luduika Danka) was victorious in the 200 free (1:50.20). Sophomore David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) touched first in the 500 (5:14.16) and 1,000 (10:48.8) frees, and freshman Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was victorious in the 200 IM (2:15.00) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.46). Sophomore Michael O'Shea (Edgewater, N.J./Leonia) won the one-meter (183.75) and three-meter (180.90) dives, and classmate Stefan Rosales (Rahway, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen) was the winner of the 100 backstroke (1:03.29).

The women defeated Lehman, 124-73. Junior Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./ Pequannock) was first in the 200 IM (2:26.76) and the 100 breaststroke (1:12.3) in a season-best time. Sophomore Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) won the 50 (26.52) and 100 (57.51) frees, and senior Traci Dombrowski (Union, N.J./Union) was also a double-winner with victories in the 200 (2:08.97) and 500 (5:52.36) frees. Senior Emily Buehler (Mays Landing, N.J./Holy Spirit) touched first in the 1,000 free (12:34.08), senior Colleen Takemoto (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) won the 100 fly in a season-best time (1:05.36), and sophomore Grace McKay (Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn) was the winner in the 100 backstroke (1:06.64). Freshman Christine Sullivan (Old Tappan, N.J./Northvale-Old Tappan) earned her first victory in the one-meter dive (151.80), and classmate Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) won the three-meter dive (142.80) for the Pioneers.

The William Paterson women will next compete Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Hunter at 6:00 p.m.
