WPU Wins at Baruch

WAYNE, N.J. (NOVEMBER 11, 2006) - The William Paterson men's (3-1) and women's (4-1) swimming and diving teams earned victories at Baruch Nov. 11.

The WPU men tallied a 116-84 victory, as all times were recorded by hand. Sophomore David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) won the 400 (4:50.41) and 800 (9:45.15) frees as one of four double winners for the Pioneers. Freshman Joe Shirrman (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) earned victories in the 50 (25.29) and 100 (58.37) frees, classmate Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Luduika Danka) won the 200 free (2:09.19) and 100 fly (1:04.07), and freshman Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) finished first in the 200 IM (2:28.78) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.01). Stefan Rosales (Rahway, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen), Smith, Karas and Shirrman also won the 200 medley relay (1:58.46).

The women defeated Baruch 120-61. Senior Traci Dombrowski (Union, N.J./Union) was one of three Pioneer double winners, placing first in the 200 (2:24.59) and 400 (5:09.59) frees. Junior Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./ Pequannock) touched the wall first in the 200 IM (2:42.53) and the 100 breaststroke (1:23.14), while sophomore Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) was first in the 50 (29.66) and 100 (1:04.97) frees. Colleen Takemoto (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) earned the win in the 100 fly (1:14.19), Katelyn Esposito (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) won the 800 free (1:05.21), Grace McKay (Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn) touched first in the 100 backstroke (1:14.36), McKay, Lyon, Takemoto and Hartwell won the 200 medley relay (2:13.87), and Dombrowski, Donivyn Schmidt (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills), Melanie Mejias (Union, N.J./Union) and Takemoto earned the win in the 200 freestyle relay (2:04.87).

The Pioneers will return to action Thursday, Nov. 16, at Lehman at 7:00 p.m.
