PITMAN, N.J. – William Paterson seniors
Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and
John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley), and junior
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands), highlighted a list of seven Pioneers who were named to the All-New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Teams, the league office announced April 30.
Courter, Elia and Guadango were selected to the All-NJAC First Team, while junior
Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) was selected to the All-NJAC Second Team . Freshmen
Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) and
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and sophomore
Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) were honorable-mention honorees.
Courter, who moved from first to third base this season, leads the NJAC in runs scored (52, 27th in Division III) and is tied for first in triples (six, 14th in Division III) while posting team bests in batting average (.430, fourth in NJAC), on-base percentage (.522, third in NJAC) and walks (26, tied-fourth in NJAC). As the Pioneers' No. 2 hitter, Courter is second on the team with 64 hits (fourth in NJAC, 35th in NCAA) and 11 doubles (tied-11th in NJAC), and third with 37 RBI (tied-ninth in NJAC).
Elia is tied for the NJAC lead and is fifth on the Pioneers' single-season home run list with 12 (30th in Division III), is second in the conference statistics with 49 RBI (59th in Division III) and 49 runs scored (51st in Division III), and third with a .722 slugging percentage as the team's cleanup hitter. The power-hitting center fielder, who is just shy of hitting .400 (.396, 13th in NJAC), is adding 57 hits (tied-eighth in NJAC), nine steals (tied-10th in NJAC) and a .455 on-base percentage. In a first-round NJAC Tournament slugfest against The College of New Jersey April 28, Elia displayed his strength by smashing a home run well over the fence in left-center, handing the Pioneers a brief 3-2 lead.
Guadango was selected as a first-team all-NJAC pick for a third consecutive season. An all-American right fielder, Guadango is second on the team with a .421 average (eighth in NJAC) with team highs in hits (67, third in NJAC, 23rd in Division III) and doubles (15, tied-fourth in NJAC) while posting 46 RBI (fourth in NJAC), 41 runs scored (tied-seventh in NJAC) and six home runs (seventh in NJAC). Guadango also is second on the team in stolen bases (12-for-12, tied-sixth in NJAC) and slugging percentage (.654, eighth in NJAC), and fifth with a .450 on-base percentage. In addition, the slugger was named the NJAC and ECAC Metro Player of the Week (April 27) after hitting .625 (10-16) with two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, a sacrifice fly and five runs scored, compiling a 1.313 slugging percentage and a .588 on-base percentage the previous week.
A fleet-footed leadoff hitter, Lugo is one of four players on the roster who is hitting over .400 (.402, 11th in NJAC). True to his speed, Lugo has five triples (tied-fourth in NJAC) and seven stolen bases (tied-14th in NJAC). He ranks fourth on the team with 35 runs scored (tied-13th in NJAC) and 34 RBI (14th in NJAC), fifth with 43 hits, and sixth with five doubles. The second baseman also boasts a .471 on-base percentage (15th in NJAC) and .542 slugging percentage, ranking third and fourth for the Pioneers, respectively. Lugo was named the NJAC and ECAC Metro Region Co-Player of the Week April 6, hitting .464 (13-28) with two doubles, 14 RBI, 11 runs scored, a sacrifice and three stolen bases the previous week.
One of three Pioneers to earn honorable-mention laurels, Coral is fifth in the conference in wins (5-1, .833 winning percentage) with a team-best 4.70 ERA as a freshman, tossing 46.0 innings (13th in NJAC) with 21 strikeouts and a save in 11 appearances and six starts.
This spring, Dorio ranks second on the team with 22 walks (tied-ninth in NJAC) and five triples (tied-fourth in NJAC, 33rd in Division III), while recording 32 runs scored (fifth on team), 29 hits, 17 RBI, six doubles, and a .296 batting average.
Moran leads the team and ranks third in the conference with 18 steals. The left fielder also is third in batting average for the Pioneers (.404, ninth in NJAC) and second in on-base percentage (.474, 13th in NJAC) while posting 55 hits (tied-10th in NJAC), 29 RBI and three triples (tied-ninth in NJAC). He was named the NJAC and ECAC Metro Region Player of the Week March 23 after hitting .571 (12-21) with three doubles, a triple, seven RBI, 11 runs and four steals in six starts the previous week, adding an .810 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage while walking six times.
