WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson senior second baseman
Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, N.J./Suffern) was named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Baseball Academic All-District II Second Team, the group announced May 10.
Poppe started 34 of the Pioneers' 36 games this spring, hitting .275 (36-131) with five doubles, a home run and 29 RBI. He ranked second for William Paterson with 39 runs scored while posting a .420 on-base percentage, five stolen bases and a .951 fielding percentage. Poppe's eighth-inning grand slam lifted WPU to 11-10 win against Luther on March 18, and he is majoring in exercise and movement science at William Paterson.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
The Pioneers finished the 2007 season with a 19-15-2 overall record and a 6-11-1 mark in NJAC play.
