Frazier Named NJAC Football Special Teams Player of the Year

Leads 11 Pioneers on All-NJAC Teams

PITMAN, N.J. – William Paterson senior punter/wide receiver Julian Frazier (Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) was named the 2013 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Football Special Teams Player of the Year, leading 11 Pioneers selections announced Nov. 22.

Frazier joined senior quarterback Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) and freshman kickoff returner Jerome Alexander (Montclair, N.J./Glen Ridge) on the All-NJAC First Team. Senior offensive lineman Dashawn Johnson (Jersey City, N.J./Hoboken), senior wide receiver Mick Paye (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) and senior tight end Brian Winfield (Newton, N.J./Newton) were selected to the All-Second Team Offense, junior defensive lineman Pat Thomas (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) and senior linebacker David Zurla (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) garnered spots on the All-Second Team Defense, and junior placekicker Robert Sinegra (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) was named to the All-Second Team Special Teams. Junior linebacker Ben Allen (Ventnor, N.J./Atlantic City) and sophomore offensive lineman Jalen Haynes (Jersey City, N.J./Hoboken) were honorable-mention selections.

Frazier led the league, ranks fourth in Division III and broke the WP record with 42.3 yards per punt (61 punts, 2,580 yards), launching 15 50+ yards and landing 14 inside the opponent 20-yard line. The Sept. 8 and Sept. 22 Special Teams Player of the Week as well as the Sept. 24 ECAC Southeast Special Teams Player of the Week, he was a starter in all 10 games, catching 29 passes for 290 yards and ranking second on the team with four receiving touchdowns. In 35 career games (15 starts), Frazier caught 45 passes for 440 yards and five touchdowns, and punted 102 times for an average of 40.4 yards, landing 23 inside the 20-yard line.

A member of the 2013 Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Football Academic All-District 2 Team and 2012 All-NJAC Honorable Mention, Gresik was 214-for-361 for 2,546 yards (254.6 yards/game; first in conference, 30th in Division III) this season, completing 17 touchdown passes while running for three scores himself. His 257.4 yards of total offense per game rate third in the league, while his 21.40 completions per game rank 28th in Division III. The Sept. 8 and Sept. 29 NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, Gresik is WP's career leader in completions (580), attempts (992), yardage (6,615) and touchdowns (40), starting in 33 of 38 games. He also owns the school's single-season yardage (2,546) and single-game completions (39, at Cortland, 9/21/13) and yardage (519, vs. Morrisville State, 10/5/13) top marks, and is tied for the single-game touchdowns (five, vs. Morrisville State, 10/5/13) record.

Alexander ranks second in the conference and seventh nationally with 31.6 yards per kickoff return (14 returns, 443 yards). The Oct. 5 NJAC and Oct. 8 ECAC Southeast Special Teams Player of the Week, he also returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown Oct. 5 against Morrisville State. Alexander played in eight games, catching seven passes for 111 yards and a score.

Johnson started in all nine of his appearances this fall, primarily at left tackle. During his time as a Pioneer, he started 33 of 37 contests.

Paye started all 10 games, leading the Pioneers with 44 receptions and 699 yards, scoring three times. He is fourth in the NJAC in receiving yards/game (69.9) and tied for seventh in receptions/game (4.4). Paye started in 26 of 33 career games, posting 97 catches, 1,544 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Winfield hauled in 30 passes (3.8 per game, tied-ninth in league) for 284 yards and a touchdown while starting in seven of eight appearances. He started seven of 25 games during his career, catching 55 passes for 644 yards and two scores.

Thomas ranked third for the Pioneers with 76 tackles (31 solo; 7.6 tackles/game, tied-12th in NJAC), starting eight of 10 games during his first season at WP. Also tied for ninth in tackles for a loss per game (1.15) and tied for 14th in sacks/game (0.30), he added one fumble recovered.

Zurla started all 10 games and led William Paterson with 85 tackles (43 solo; 8.5 tackles/game, tied-fifth in conference), including 6.0 stops for a loss and 3.0 sacks (0.30 per game, tied-14th in NJAC). A starter in 17 of 31 career games, he collected 135 tackles (58 solo, 8.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks).

A 2011 honorable-mention all-NJAC selection, Sinegra made eight of 12 (.667) field-goal attempts and was 29-for-30 on PATs, averaging 57.6 yards per kickoff. Second in scoring/kick and ninth overall in scoring (5.3 points/game), he also is second in the league in both FG/game (0.80) and field-goal percentage and third in PAT percentage (.967). The WP career leader with 22 field goals (22-38), he has made 67 of 72 PATs and owns the school's record for longest field goal made (48, at Western Connecticut, 11/12/11).

Allen was second for WP with 81 tackles (41 solo), ranking tied for eighth in the conference with 8.1 stops per contest. A starter in all 10 games, he forced a fumble and blocked a kick, and rates fourth in the NJAC in tackles for loss/game (1.35) and tied for 14th in sacks/game (0.30). During his career, he has started 14 of 18 games and has tallied 117 tackles (52 solo, 15.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks).

Haynes started all 10 games at right tackle this season for the Pioneers, and has 12 starts in 13 career games on the offensive line.
