Eleven Pioneers Named to All-NJAC Football Team

Bruke, Rivera Earn First-Team Honors to Lead WP

Jared Burke (left) and Joel Rivera were first-team all-NJAC selections to lead a list of 11 Pioneer honorees.
PITMAN, N.J. – William Paterson senior linebacker Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) and senior wide receiver Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) led a list of 11 Pioneers named to the All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Football Team announced Nov. 20.

Burke was selected to the Defense All-First Team, while Rivera was named to the Offense All-First Team. Sophomore running back Marcus McKinney (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy), senior offensive lineman Saul Garcia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) and senior tight end Chris Schule (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) earned offensive second-team accolades, while junior cornerback Leer Biddle (Sicklerville, N.J./Lenape), sophomore defensive back Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), junior defensive lineman Dyon Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic) and senior defensive lineman Keith Sayball (Milford, Conn./Foran) were defensive second-team honorees. Junior offensive lineman Chris Osborn (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) and junior linebacker Jim Hamill (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) received honorable-mention selections.

A two-time second-team all-NJAC selection (2007-08), Burke started in nine games this fall and compiled 45 tackles (16 solo, 5.0 TFL), two pass break-ups, a fumble recovery, and two forced fumbles (0.22 per game, tied-seventh in NJAC). During his career, he posted 230 tackles (126 solo, 28.5 TFL), three fumbles forced and recovered, three blocked kicks and an interception while starting 30 of 35 games.

Rivera was named to the All-NJAC First Team for the second straight year after starting all 10 games this fall and catching 51 passes for 751 yards and nine touchdowns. Invited to play in the 2009 Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) and the Division III Football Senior Classic all-star games in December, he ranked third in the NJAC in receptions/game (5.1) and receiving yards/game (75.1), sixth in all-purpose yardage (95.9 yards/game), eighth in scoring/TDs (5.4 points/game), and tied for 11th in scoring (5.4 points/game). Rivera owns the career receptions (159), yardage (2,209) and touchdowns (23) records, as well as the single-season catches (74, 2008) and yardage (965) marks, and the single-game receptions (16, 9/27/08 at Rowan) and yardage (226, 9/27/08 at Rowan) records at William Paterson after starting in 29 of 36 career games.

McKinney ranked third in the NJAC in rushing yardage (86.9 yards/game), carrying 236 times and scoring 11 touchdowns this fall while starting in all 10 games. Also fourth in scoring/TDs (6.6 points/game), fifth in scoring (6.6 points/game) and all-purpose yardage (96.6 yards/game), and 12th in total offense (86.9 yards/game) in the NJAC statistics, he was named the NJAC and ECAC Southeast Region Player of the Week and a member of the D3football.com National Team of the Week after he gained 224 yards and scored four touchdowns on a school-record 42 carries as William Paterson celebrated Homecoming with a 43-28 victory against The College of New Jersey Oct. 17. In two seasons, McKinney has gained 1,165 yards and scored 15 touchdowns while carrying 301 times in 17 games (10 starts).

An honorable-mention all-conference selection a year ago, Garcia started all 10 games at left tackle this season and helped to lead a Pioneer offensive unit that led the conference in time of possession (31:29). In four years at William Paterson, Garcia started in 31 of 35 games.

Schule had the best numbers of his career this fall, catching 24 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns to rank second in each category for the Pioneers. A four-year starter, Schule compiled career numbers of 46 catches for 524 yards and five scores.
