Men's Swimming and Diving Slotted in the Top Ten for Day One at Mets

Senior Drew Macchia and Junior Jimmy Sharkey Place in the Finals

Senior Ryan Achyuthuni contributed to both relays in the finals.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Strong relay finishes and individual final placements led the men's swimming and diving team to eighth place out of 12 Division III teams and 10th out of 14 total teams to complete the first day of the Metropolitan Championships Feb. 22. 
 
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Junior Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) (22.34), classmate Jimmy Sharkey (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) (23.21), senior Ryan Achyuthuni (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) (22.60), and senior Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) (21.48) recorded a time of 1:29.63 to place second in the B Final of the 200 free relay.
  • Sharkey touched fifth in the C Final of the 500 free with a personal best time of 4:55.19. 
  • Also notable, Macchia took seventh in the C Final of the 50 free by touching the wall in 21.95, his second strongest time of his career. 
  • To finish out the meet, the Pioneers placed fifth in the 400 medley relay B Final (3:56.85).  Sharkey (58.55), sophomore Valentine Perez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton) (1:08.07), sophomore Raul Mancera (Trenton, N.J./Nottingham) (1:00.01), and Achyuthuni (50.22) utilized combined efforts to end day one on a strong note.
  • Multiple personal best times were recorded by the Pioneers over the course of the day.  Sophomore Bradley Belina (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) had a career-high performance in the 500 free (5:22.13), classmate John Conlow (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) swam the 500 free in 5:24.70, sophomore Thomas Haughey (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) completed the same race in 5:25.59, and junior Matt Infurna (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) touched the wall in 5:53.89 to earn a personal best time in that event.
  • Mancera and Perez both tallied personal best times in the 200 IM by swimming in 2:24.84 and 2:18.78, respectively.

  • Events continue tomorrow, Feb. 23, starting at 9:30 a.m. at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. for day two of the Metropolitan Championships three-day affair.
