WAYNE, N.J. – The No. 15 nationally ranked Lions of The College of New Jersey (4-4, 3-1 NJAC) snapped the William Paterson men's swimming and diving's home winning streak dating back to Nov. 10, 2017 Feb. 3, as the Pioneers fell in the regular-season finale, 167-118.
Despite the conclusion of the four-meet home winning streak, WP had a pair seniors post double winning performances in the regular-season finale, with
Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) and
Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) touching first twice. Taboadela claimed his winning times in the 200 back (1:59.85) and 200 IM (2:00.24), and just missed out on a third win in the 100 back (55.11), coming up just 0.93 second short of the lead. All told, Taboadela has won 43 individual events this season.
Melendez posted impressive marks to win the 200 fly (2:03.16) and 100 fly (55.80), while also contributing to the Pioneers' 11-point outcome in the 200 free relay (1:35.62), joining sophomore
Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.), classmate Jimmy Sharkey and junior
Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).
Macchia also garnered four points on his own with a strong second-place time in the 50 free (23.13). Logue wasn't far off, earning points at a clip of 23.86.
In diving, junior
William Barrett (Pompton Lakes, N.J. /Pompton Lakes ) registered 13 points by finishing second in the one-meter (220.35) and first in the three-meter (198.38) dives.
William Paterson will be off from competition for just under two weeks until it heads to Rutgers University for the three-day Metropolitan Championships beginning Friday, Feb. 16.
