Complete Tournament Results
MADISON, N.J. – The William Paterson tennis team competed at the annual New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tournament hosted by Drew University Saturday.
The tournament was comprised of four flights in both singles and doubles play, with a main draw and back draw bracket for each flight.
Sophomores
Kaworu Ishikawa (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) and Michelle Boyle represented the Pioneers in flight 'A', and after falling in the main draw, Ishikawa battled in her back draw match, falling 4-8. Boyle also earned a set win in the back draw match but ultimately fell 1-8. In flight 'B' freshman
Arrion Berry (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Twp.) and sophomore
Briya Smallwood (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) also fell in the main draw, and both competed in their back draw matches before falling 1-8 and 2-8 respectively.
The Pioneers also had two participants in flight 'C', however junior Jessica Papin-Yuhktanova defaulted to her opponent in her main draw matchup. After falling in the main draw, sophomore
Sam Uribe (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) dropped a close matchup in the back draw, falling 5-8. Freshman
Akinboye Oluwapelumi (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) competed in flight 'D', falling in the main draw 3-8 before dropping her back draw matchup 2-8.
In the doubles tournament, the Pioneers competed in the top two flights. In flight 'A', Ishikawa and Papin-Yuhktanova dropped their main draw matchup 2-8, before putting up a battle in the back draw, falling by a 4-8 final. The team of Boyle and Berry also competed in the top flight, suffering a 3-8 loss in the main draw before succumbing 0-8 in the back draw.
Flight 'B' featured the doubles team of Uribe and Smallwood. After the duo fell in their main draw match, they were victorious for the Pioneers' only victory of the day in the back draw, taking down their opponent 8-7 (9-3).
William Paterson returns to action on Wednesday, October 4 when they host Drew University in non-conference action beginning at 4:00 p.m.
