Personal Bests Set Despite Men’s Swimming and Diving’s Loss to No. 15 Rowan, Snapping Five-Meet Winning Streak

Taboadela Wins Another Three Events, Melendez Sets Two Career-Best Times

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J.  – It took a nationally-ranked opponent in No. 15 Rowan (2-1, 1-0 NJAC) to snap William Paterson men's swimming and diving's (5-1, 0-1 NJAC) second-straight five-meet winning streak to open a season, as the Pioneers fell 168-73 to the Profs in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Nov. 10.

Despite the loss, senior Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) continued an impressive streak of three wins in his fifth straight meet. The Rockaway, N.J. native posted winning times in the 200 IM (1:58.72), 100 back (54.38) and 100 breast (1:03.05). His showings in the 100 back and 100 breast were both season-bests as the senior swam to his 16th, 17th and 18th individual wins on the year.

WP also had a number of swimmers make personal strides and set career-best times. Classmate Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) blew past two previous career-best marks, finishing third in the 50 free (23.34) and second in the 100 fly (56.19), posting career-fastest times in both. His time in the 100 fly was 1.54 seconds quicker than his previous career-best time.

Junior Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and sophomore Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) were stroke-for-stroke once again in the 100 free, together combining to earn seven team points. Macchia narrowly missed winning the race, finishing second (51.74), while Logue notched third (52.24).

Three Pioneer freshman posted season-bests as well. Thomas Haughey (Folsom, Pa. /Ridley) in the 1,000 free (11:45.57), Valentine Perez (Hamilton, N.J. /Hamilton) in the 100 back and John Conlow (Mount Laurel, N.J. /Lenape) in the 500 free (6:00.64) all claimed their fastest paces yet at WP. Sophomore Jimmy Sharkey (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) touched the final wall for his fastest time in the 200 IM during the 2017-18 campaign with a time of 2:24.83.

Men's swimming and diving cruised to a 102-34 win at home against Purchase last year and will look to do the same when it heads to face the Panthers (0-2) in Purchase Tuesday, Nov.14, at 6:00 p.m.
