WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's swimming and diving team (1-0) prevailed 115-85 against Wilkes (0-1) in the season opener Oct. 8.
Junior
Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) led the Pioneers as a triple winner, touching first in the 200 IM (2:09.70), 100 back (1:02.29) and 100 breast (1:04.54).
Senior
Jeremy Oiler (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) secured two victories, winning the 1,000 free (11:47.32) and 500 free (5:38.60).
In diving, freshman
Emmanuel Garcia (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) opened his WP career as a double-winner, winning the one-meter required (1:09.90) and one-meter optional (125.35) events.
Single winners for the Pioneers included junior
Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) in the 200 free (1:55.18), senior
Nick Cowie (Newton, N.J./Newton) in the 100 fly (57.69), and sophomore
Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the 50 free (23.28).
The relay team of Oiler, Cowie, Melendez and Macchia helped WP claim the 200 free relay (1:35.93). Melendez swam the fastest stint out of the quarter, touching the wall in 23.10.
Senior
Grant Ashcraft (Penns Grove, N.J./Woodstown), sophomore
Tyler Stevens (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech), freshman
Terrence Hopkins (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) and freshman
Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) combined to win the 200 medley relay (1:54.43). Logue anchored the group with a time of 23.91.
