OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - William Paterson men's and women's swimming and diving head coach
Ed Gurka posted his 700th career victory as the Pioneer men (2-0) earned a 92-79 win Oct. 19 at Old Westbury (0-2).
Paired with an 88-85 victory by the WP women, Gurka now owns marks of 337-182 as the men's head coach and 363-181-3 as the women's head coach for an overall slate of 700-363-3 in his 41st season at William Paterson.
Junior
Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) was a triple winner for the second straight meet, touching the wall first in the 500 free (5:14.87), 200 IM (2:03.98) and 100 breast (1:04.07).
Senior
Jeremy Oiler (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) secured two events for the Pioneers, winning the 1,000 free (11:42.50) along with the 100 back (1:03.49).
Also coming in as a double winner was senior
Nick Cowie (Newton, N.J./Newton). Cowie was victorious in the 200 free (2:09.32) and 100 fly (58.19).
Sophomore
Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) claimed the 50 free (23.83), and junior
Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) won the 100 free (52.84).
WP also won two relay events. Senior
Grant Ashcraft (Penns Grove, N.J./Woodstown), Melendez, Cowie and freshman
Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) secured the 200 medley relay (1:51.94), and Oiler, freshman
Jimmy Sharkey (Hamilton, N.J/Hamilton West), freshman
Terrence Hopkins (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) and Macchia won the 400 freestyle relay (3:47.87).
William Paterson will host FDU-Florham Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1:00 p.m.
