Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – William Paterson's
Brittany LaBruna (Bloomingdale, N.J./Continental Academy) rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to win the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional title, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, Sept. 28 at William Smith College.
As the Northeast Regional champion, LaBruna has qualified for the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 15-18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
The top-seeded LaBruna defeated seventh-seeded Mako Tanaka from Geneseo in the championship match following a 6-2, 6-2 semifinal win against third-seeded Carmen Lai of NYU.
On Sept. 27, LaBruna was a 6-2, 6-1 winner against ninth-seeded Michelle Fuca of Skidmore in the third round, and posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory against No. 16 seed Fleura Shiyanova of NYU in the quarterfinal round. She collected a 6-1, 6-0 triumph against Scranton's Anika Pompitaksuk and a 6-2, 6-1 win against Ithaca's Marni Blumenthal during the tournament's first two rounds Sept. 26.
This marks the second straight year that LaBruna was the tourney's top seed. She won the 2013 Northeast Regional title as a freshman, and reached the 2014 semifinals as a sophomore.
William Paterson will host Kean Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6:00 p.m.
