GENEVA, N.Y. – William Paterson freshman
Brittany LaBruna (Bloomingdale, N.J./Continental Academy) took home the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional singles title Sept. 30 at William Smith College. With the victory, she qualified for the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 10-13 at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers, Fla., but due to academic commitments, she declined the invitation.
LaBruna, the second-seeded singles player, defeated fourth-seeded Jessica Bourque of Stevens in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the championship match against top-seeded Cristina Nunez from Ithaca. After winning the first set, 7-5, LaBruna dropped the second, 6-2. During the deciding third set, LaBruna came away with a 7-5 victory and the regional title.
She opened the three-day tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Ramapo's Sara Luby, then posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Janice Zhao of the University of Rochester on Sept. 28. LaBruna defeated 15th-seeded Maite Vera Antelo of RIT, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the third round, and registered a 6-2, 7-5 win against RPI's Casey Olsen in the quarterfinals on Sept. 29.
LaBruna is 13-0 at first singles for the Pioneers this fall, including a 6-4, 6-4 victory against The College of New Jersey's Katie Buchbinder Sept. 21. It is believed that LaBruna's win marked the first time in more than two decades that perennial power TCNJ suffered a first-singles loss against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) competition. For her efforts, LaBruna has three times been named the NJAC Rookie of the Week (Sept. 9, Sept. 16, Sept. 23) this season.
