Hackett Lifts Men’s Soccer to 2-1 Overtime Win in Season Opener

Pioneers Defeat Host Johns Hopkins

Sophomore Marcus Hackett scored both goals of a 2-1 overtime victory at Johns Hopkins.
BOX SCORE

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) scored twice, including the game winner in overtime, to lift the William Paterson men's soccer team (1-0) to a 2-1 victory against host John Hopkins (0-1) Sept. 1 in the opening round of the Blue Jay Invitational.

Hackett hit a lofted shot from 30 yards out 4:08 into the extra time to hand the Pioneers the victory in their season opener.  After Matt Carey gave JHU the lead, dribbling in to finish a through ball in the 22nd minute, Hackett tallied the equalizer less than 10 minutes before the end of regulation, volleying in a loose ball in the box.

Sophomore Santiago Mesa (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) made two saves for the Pioneers, and Nick Cerrone had six stops for the Blue Jays.

William Paterson will play Wesley Sunday, Sept. 2, at 4:00 p.m. in the second round of the Blue Jay Invitational.
