KISSIMMEE, FLA. – William Paterson (1-1) split its season-opening contests at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., March 12. The Pioneers defeated Geneva, Pa. (5-4), 6-1, and lost to No. 15 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (12-2), 8-1.

GAME ONE
Four different Pioneers each had a pair of hits as William Paterson began its season with a 6-1 victory against Geneva (Pa.).

Geneva struck first with a run during its first at-bat, but the Pioneers evened things up when senior Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) led off the second inning with a walk and eventually scored on a Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) single.

Senior Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) reached on an error to start the third and was promptly tripled in by freshman Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII). Vitale's single through the left side of the infield later plated Miele and gave WP a 3-1 lead.

Miele's fifth-inning leadoff single and Vitale's two-out double set the stage for a Nicole Walls (Brodentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) two-run base hit. Freshman Danielle Capozzi (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) drove in Walls with a pinch-hit double for the Pioneers' final run of the day.

Vitale was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, and she pitched the complete-game victory (1-0), scattering five hits, striking out four and walking four. Maciolek went 2-for-3, Miele finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, and Nadolny was 2-for-4.

GAME TWO
No. 15 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored twice during both the first and third innings on its way to an 8-1 victory.

Two singles and a triple helped the Athenas cross the plate twice during the bottom of the first inning, and a two-run homer made it a 4-0 score after three frames.

William Paterson got on the scoreboard in the fourth after Miele led off with a single, Capozzi was hit by a pitch and Vitale had a base hit, loading the bases for Maciolek, whose groundout plated Miele from third base.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps used a two-run home run in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth to finish the scoring.

Nadolny was 2-for-4 at the plate to pace the Pioneers. Junior Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) took the loss (0-1), surrendering 11 hits and eight runs (seven earned) while striking out three and walking two.

William Paterson will face Westminster (Pa.) and No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan Sunday, March 13, at the Rebel Spring Games.
