Box Score

MESA, ARIZ. – William Paterson (0-2-1) rallied late but could not overcome Macalester (2-0), 7-5, at the Greater Phoenix Baseball Invitational March 12.

Macalester took control early, building a 5-0 lead by the end of the sixth inning. William Paterson got two of those scores back in the top of the seventh when freshman Ken O'Donnell (Teaneck, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) doubled in Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional).

Macalester crossed the plate twice during the bottom of the seventh to make it a 7-2 score, but the Pioneers put together a rally during the top of the ninth. Freshman A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), Hansen and junior Blake Crouch (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) all drew walks to load the bases for pinch hitter Rob Doughty (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic), who singled in Flores. Junior Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) had a bases-loaded walk, and junior Anthony Dorio's (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) groundout plated Crouch. A groundout to the Macalester first baseman and subsequent play at the plate ended William Paterson's comeback hopes.

O'Donnell was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and Somers finished 2-for-4. Freshman Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) took the loss (0-1), allowing five runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings. Freshmen Pete Savastano (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) gave up two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning, and classmate Eric Villegas (Newark, N.J./Elizabeth) tossed a scoreless eighth.

William Paterson will face Concordia (Ill.) Sunday, March 13, at 9:00 a.m. MT at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
