WAYNE, N.J. – Four members of the William Paterson baseball team earned spots on the 2010 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division II/III All-State Teams released May 18. Senior designated hitter
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands)
and junior left-handed pitcher
Brett Carroll (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) were second-team honorees, sophomore outfielder
Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) was named to the All-Third Team, and right-handed pitcher
Jacob Baron (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) was a member of the All-Rookie Team.
Carroll paced the pitching staff with a 4-3 record and a 3.04 earned-run average during his first season as a Pioneer. A transfer from Oral Roberts, the honorable-mention all-conference selection started in nine of 10 appearances, pitched two complete games, struck out 76 and walked 27 in 68.0 innings pitched, and registered a save.
A two-time all-American and a four-time first-team all-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) pick, Guadango led the Pioneers with eight home runs, a .494 on-base percentage and a .643 slugging percentage this spring, adding a .380 batting average, eight doubles, 34 runs scored, 29 RBI, and eight stolen bases. Guadango finished his career as William Paterson's hits (257) and doubles (54) leader, and ranks first in at-bats (622), third in runs (167), fifth in home runs (26), tied for fifth in hit by pitches (17), sixth in batting average (.413) and tied for 10th in triples (nine) while starting in 149 of 152 career games. Guadango was selected to the 2009 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America Third Team and the ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region, All-ECAC Metro Region, and NJCBA Division II/III All-State First Teams, the 2008 ABCA All-America Second Team and the ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region, ECAC All-Metro Region, and NJCBA Division II/III All-State First Teams, and the 2007 ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region All-Second Team while earning the NJCBA Division II/III Rookie Player of the Year award.
Montanile was named a member of the All-NJAC Second Team after starting in 35 of 36 games and batting .331 with nine doubles, two triples, 20 RBI and 28 runs scored, all while contributing 12 assists from the outfield (69 putouts, three errors, .964 fielding percentage). He finished the season with a 13-game hit streak, and tallied 13 multi-hit games during the campaign.
Baron made the transition from closer to league-game starter, finishing the season with a 5-1 record, 6.86 ERA and one save in 12 appearances. A starter in three contests, he pitched one complete game and struck out 11 hitters in 39.1 innings.
William Paterson finished the 2010 season 16-21-1 overall and 6-12 in the NJAC.
