Baseball Suffers 9-7 Loss on Walk-Off Homer

Pioneers Lose to Transylvania

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – A two-run, walk-off home run sent William Paterson (5-5-1) to a 9-7 loss against Transylvania (9-3) March 18 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Sophomore Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) was 3-for-5, hit a double and drove in two runs, and both Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./Hudson Catholic) each contributed two hits.

The Pioneers took early command of the game with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Dorio and Lugo got the Pioneers on the scoreboard, and Dorio knocked in two more with another double during his next at-bat, helping to stake WP to a 6-0 lead.

Drew Zuckerman hit a grand slam during the bottom of the sixth, making it a 6-4 score, and Transy added a RBI-double in the seventh to get within one. Senior Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) delivered Lugo from third with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly, but Transylvania answered with two runs in the home half of the frame, tying the contest with a run-scoring base hit and a sac fly.

A double play ended the Pioneers' scoring chances in the ninth, and after a one-out single, Zuckerman hit his second home run of the day to hand Transylvania the victory.

Junior Brett Carroll (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) pitched the first 6.0 innings, striking out 12 while allowing five runs on eight hits. Junior John Slootmaker (Pequannock, N.J./Lakeland Regional) tossed 1.1 innings and gave up two runs and two hits. Sophomore Blake Crouch (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) fell to 0-2 after surrendering the final two runs.

The Pioneers will finish play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Friday, March 19, facing Anderson at 3:00 p.m.
