LAKE WALES, FLA. – William Paterson fell to 4-3-1 this season after losing to Greenville, 5-4 and 15-4, in a seven-inning doubleheader March 15 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
GAME ONE
Despite owning a 4-2 lead in the middle of the fifth, the Pioneers could not hold off the Panthers in the opener.
Greenville built an early advantage with single runs in the second and third innings, but William Paterson answered with a
Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) RBI-single in the third, and an
Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) sacrifice fly and a
Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) two-run homer in the top of the fifth, giving the Pioneers a 4-2 edge.
A Panther single and double plated a run in the sixth, and Greenville won the game with a pair of scores during its last at-bat, using a two-out, two-run double to earn the victory.
Guadango was 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Senior
Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) went 2-for-4 at the dish with a stolen base. Junior
Ryan Steidl (Randolph, N.J./Morris Knolls) started on the mound and allowed eight hits and three earned runs in 5.2 innings, striking out five and walking three. Sophomore
Blake Crouch (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) suffered the loss (0-1), giving up two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning of work.
GAME TWO
A three-run homer in the top of the first set the tone for the Panthers in a 15-4 night-cap victory.
Greenville posted three runs to the board in both the first and second innings, and following a
Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) sacrifice fly, the Panthers were ahead by a 7-1 count after three. The Panthers added six more in the fifth and two in the sixth. A Fondacaro fielder's choice and error were enough to push across a score in the bottom of the fifth for WP, and freshman
Joe Fiorino (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) and Franco plated runs with RBI-singles during the home half of the sixth.
Franco was 3-for-4 and sophomore
Jonattan Fernandez (Paterson, N.J./Sports Business Academy) was 2-for-4. Five different Pioneers took the hill, including starter
Scott Zirul (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), who fell to 0-1 (1.1 innings, three hits, six runs).
The Pioneers will face Westfield State Tuesday, March 16, at 3:30 p.m. at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
