Pioneer Women Place Fourth at 2010 Metropolitan Championships

Albruzzese Named Senior Award Winner

Giana Albruzzese was named the winner of the Dick Krempecki Outstanding Senior Award at the conclusion of the Metropolitan Championships.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (FEBRUARY 21, 2010) -- Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) was selected as the winner of the 2010 Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference's Dick Krempecki Outstanding Senior Award as the William Paterson women's swimming and diving team placed fourth of 14 Division III teams at the three-day Metropolitan Championships.

Albruzzese finished her Pioneer career by placing 11th in the one-meter (281.85) and ninth in the three-meter (271.65) dive preliminaries. As a junior, she finished sixth in both the one-meter (296.25) and three-meter (295.15) dives, and as a sophomore she was fourth in the one-meter dive (270.60) and fifth in the three-meter dive (263.91). Albruzzese posted a score of 241.50 in the one-meter dive and 240.90 in the three-meter (fifth place) at the Metropolitan Championships as a freshman.

Sophomore Brett Kuchin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) had her second record-breaking swim in as many days, setting a new standard in the 200 breast with a time of 2:31.56, finishing seventh in the A Final. Her time bettered the previous record of 2:31.84 (Caitlin Rotondo, 2008-09). On Feb. 20, she broke the Pioneers' 100 breast record (1:08.52).

In the 1,650 free, junior Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) was 13th (19:04.93), freshman Kerry Doris (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) placed 21st (20:18.57), and junior Kirsten Shea (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) finished 23rd (20:35.24). Senior Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton) won the 200 breast C Final (2:35.02), sophomore Lesly Mendoza (Passaic, N.J./Paramus Catholic) was third in the 200 fly C Final (2:25.12), and sophomore Stephanie Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) touched seventh in the 200 fly C Final (2:28.24).

The 400 free relay of Rotondo, Mendoza, freshman Christine Uporsky (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) and Kuchin placed seventh in the A Final in a time of 3:48.16.
