WAYNE, N.J. -- Senior
Ryan Miller (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) finished a deflection on the goal line in the 106th minute to help William Paterson (7-1-2) overcome an early 2-0 deficit and defeat U.S. Merchant Marine (7-1-2), 3-2 in double overtime, Oct. 5 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
Senior
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) played a ball across the goal mouth that USMMA goalkeeper Gary Poulin could not control, and Miller knocked it in for the game winner. For Valerio, the point moved him into a tie for first place on the William Paterson career assists chart with 30 (Adam Grossman, 1994-97; Delvin Horsford, 1994-97).
The Mariners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, thanks in part to a Pioneer miscue. A USMMA cross through the box was misplayed by a William Paterson player, and the ball rolled into the back of the net to hand Merchant Marine a 1-0 edge less than five minutes into the contest. Then in the 18th minute, senior Dan Twito cut back on the left side of the box and sent a ball to the far post that junior Andrew MacKenzie buried for his second goal of the year.
The Pioneers had an excellent chance when a
Michael Encarnacion (Franklin, N.J./Passaic County Tech) sailed just high of the bar with 13 minutes left in the opening period. But WP was able to cut the lead in half six minutes later when Valerio collected an attempted clearing header and looped the ball over Poulin and into the lower-right corner of the goal.
William Paterson almost evened it up twice during the first 12 minutes of the second half, but freshman
Mike Lowe's (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. duPont) effort just missed the frame, and a ball on the goal line was ruled to have been out of bounds before by freshman
Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) could punch it in.
Senior
Ambrogio Pipitone (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) picked a perfect time for his first goal of the season, taking a
Dan Fulmer (Andover, N.J./Newton) pass and launching a 25-yard shot from the left wing, tucking it inside the far post in the 71st minute and tying the match.
Sophomore
Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) nearly broke the deadlock with a ball off the crossbar with 10:45 remaining in regulation, and Eze did the same 90 seconds into the extra time.
Junior
Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) had four saves for William Paterson, and Poulin had five for U.S. Merchant Marine.
The Pioneers will host Montclair State Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7:00 p.m.
