ONEONTA, N.Y. – William Paterson (3-1-1) suffered its first men's soccer loss of the season, dropping a hard-fought 2-1 decision to host Oneonta State (4-0) in slick and windy conditions Sept. 11 during the first round of the Mayor's Cup Tournament.
All of the game's scoring came during the opening half of play. The shots at the end of the contest were even at eight apiece, and each goalkeeper made three saves.
Evan Jedynak's first goal for the Red Dragons came at the 24-minute mark when he collected a rebound off Pioneer goalkeeper
Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick), who saved an Eric Fortier shot. Jedynak was able to collect the loose ball and put it past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
Nearly nine minutes later, Jedynak once again found a loose ball inside the box and shot it over the keeper's legs and into the lower-left corner of the goal for a 2-0 cushion.
William Paterson cut Oneonta's lead in half during the 40th minute of play thanks to a score by junior
Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) and assist from
Joe Strawman (Ringoes, N.J./ Hunterdon Central Regional). DeMatteo came away from a scramble in the box to put the ball over the line.
The Pioneers will face either Skidmore or No. 22 Western New England in the consolation game of the Mayor's Cup Tournament Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1:00 p.m.
