WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman
Brett Kuchin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) established three new school records as the William Paterson women's swimming and diving team (12-2, 2-2 NJAC) celebrated Senior Day with a 165-133 victory against Montclair State (5-8, 1-3 NJAC) Feb. 7 at Wightman Pool. Overall, the Pioneers were victorious in 13 of the 16 events.
Kuchin set new standards in each of the breaststroke distances, posting times of 32.44 in the 50, 1:09.71 in the 100, and 2:33.78 in the 200. Her times bettered the previous records of 32.60 (Kathy Krupp, 1974-75), 1:10.64 (Lisa Bedford, 1990-91) and 2:33.85 (
Jessica Lyon, 2005-06).
Senior
Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) was a triple winner, finishing first in the 50 (24.91), 100 (54.60) and 200 (2:00.22) frees to just miss out on breaking two Pioneer records. Classmate
Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) also was a triple winner, touching first in the 100 back (1:00.60), 200 back (2:14.11) and 200 IM (2:19.94).
Sophomore
Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) shaved nearly a minute off her personal best in the 1,000 free (11:19.2), adding a victory in the 500 free (5:30.32), and freshman
Lesly Mendoza (Passaic, N.J./Paramus Catholic) won the 100 fly (1:04.23).
The 200 medley relay team of McKay, Kuchin, Mendoza and Hartwell won with a time of 1:53.90, while the 400 medley relay team of
Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton),
Tara Graham (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), Mendoza and Hartwell posted a winning time of 3:45.83.
Hartwell, McKay and
Casey Eustace (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) were honored as part of the Pioneers' Senior Day activities.
William Paterson will next compete Feb. 20-22 at the Metropolitan Championships at Rutgers University in Piscataway.
