Pioneer Men's Swimmers Turn in Another Strong Performance

Karas Third in 200 Free on Mets' Second Day

Junior Voyta Karas was third in the 200 free A Final to lead the Pioneers' efforts.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Several Pioneers again turned in strong performances as the William Paterson men' swimming and diving team completed the second day of competition at the Metropolitan Championships Feb. 21.  After 26 events, the Pioneers are sixth of 11 Division III teams with 303 points.

Junior Voyta Karas (Brno, Czech Republic) touched third in the 200 free A Final with a time of 1:41.15, good enough to exceed the NCAA Championships B qualifying standard. Senior David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) was third in the 400 IM B Final (4:19.27), while junior Stefan Rosales (Rahway, N.J./St. Joseph's-Metuchen) was third in the 100 back B Final (56.20). In the 100 breast, junior Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) won the C Final (1:03.10) and sophomore Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) placed eighth in the C Final (1:04.51).

The 800 free relay team of Caputo, Lucas Hopper (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Edward Zappile (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) and Jordan McGrath (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington City) was eighth with a time of 7:35.77.

The Pioneers will compete in third and final day of the Metropolitan Championships on Sunday, Feb. 22.
