WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman Danielle Tearl scored three times for the Wolverine field hockey team, including the game winner 35 seconds into overtime, as visiting Wesley (10-3) defeated William Paterson (6-7) by a 4-3 score Oct. 10.
Wesley raced down the field to start the extra session, and Tearl was able to clean up a
Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) save of a Brook Tadlock shot, scoring the game-winning goal for the Wolverines.
William Paterson struck first just 12:02 into the contest. After a scramble inside the circle, William Paterson was awarded a penalty stroke with 23:08 showing on the clock in the first half. The Pioneers were unable to convert on the opportunity, but 10 seconds later a Wesley turnover resulted in a
Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) goal. The strike, assisted by freshman
Kelsey Rella (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape), gave William Paterson the early 1-0 advantage.
The Wolverines fought back to even the contest 3:45 before halftime, when Tearl got her stick on a long hit by senior Amanda Fisher, cashing in on one of Wesley's eight first-half corners and knotting the game at 1-1.
William Paterson struck again less than five minutes into the second period, when Wesley goalie Sarah Johnson was caught out of the cage and Rella knocked an
Amanda Sheehan (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) pass into the boards. The Pioneers tacked on another goal in the 43rd minute during a penalty corner, as
Jennie Hara (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) received the ball at the top of the circle and sent it over to
Jodi Feriod (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) on the right wing. Feriod's pass found Winkelspecht's stick on the far post, handing William Paterson a 3-1 edge.
Wesley cut into that lead with another Tearl goal, this one an unassisted strike with 16:17 to play in the contest. The Wolverines then scored the equalizer less than five minutes later, thanks to a long drive by Fisher off a corner that bounced through the circle and found its way into the cage.
Johnson had six saves for Wesley, and Fisher and Brooke Bennett added defensive saves for the Wolverines. Auger had eight stops for the Pioneers. WP owned a narrow 16-15 edge in shots, and Wesley had a 14-9 advantage in corners.
William Paterson will continue its five-game homestand Wednesday, Oct. 14, against No. 15 Stevens at 7:00 p.m.
