Softball Trades Wins with Wilkes

WILKES-BARRIE, Pa. – The William Paterson softball team (12-8) traded wins with host Wilkes (16-8) April 6, winning the first game, 6-1, before dropping the night cap, 7-1.

Senior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) earned the victory for William Paterson in the first game of the day. She went 7.0 innings and allowed only seven hits to improve to 7-2. Lindsay Behrenshausen took the loss for Wilkes after giving up seven hits and six runs, three of which were earned, in 7.0 innings of work.

The game was tied at 1-1 heading into the sixth inning before the Pioneers took advantage of two Wilkes errors to score three times with two outs. Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) had a two-run double during the frame, while Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) added a run-scoring single that gave her team a 4-1 lead.

The Pioneers tacked on two runs in the seventh to up their lead to 6-1. Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and Rayna Caruso (Madison, N.J./Madison) each drove in one run with a double.

Mendez was the only two-time hitter for the Pioneers with a pair of singles. Kaitlyn Kormanik had two singles to lead Wilkes offensively.

Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a sacrifice fly by Gina Stefanelli. The Lady Colonels would add four runs in the third frame to take control of the game. Alyssa Ciesla drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Kerry Finnerty, Kristy Ordile and Cori Saltzer contributed a run-scoring single each as the lead grew to 5-0 after three innings.

The Lady Colonels made it 7-0 with two runs in the fifth. The first run scored on a solo home run by Erin Plank. The second run crossed when Sara Elliott delivered a single that scored Finnerty, who had singled earlier in the inning.

The Pioneers got on the board in the sixth inning. Caruso led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Kelly Apgar (Andover, N.J./Lenape Valley). Apgar moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a ground out by Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) to make it 7-1.

Maureen Pelot tossed a complete game with five strikeouts to garner the pitching victory for Wilkes. She allowed only seven hits and walked one. Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills), the first of three William Paterson pitchers, suffered the loss (2-2). She lasted two-plus innings and gave up six hits and five runs.

Finnerty had three hits to pace a 14-hit Wilkes attack. Finnerty, Ordile, Alex Ingram and Kathy Dalton finished with two hits apiece. Zippler and Kate Braun (Philadelphia, Pa./Gloucester Catholic) had two singles each for William Paterson.

The Pioneers will play a NJAC doubleheader at No. 9 Ramapo Monday, April 7, at 3:00 p.m.
