Women's Swimmers Fourth at Met Championships

The Pioneers were eighth of 19 teams at the Metropolitan Championships.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The William Paterson swimming and diving teams finished the 2007-08 season Feb. 24 at the Metropolitan Championships at Rutgers' Sonny Werblin Center. The Pioneer men finished fifth of 10 Division III teams with 473.5 points, while the women were fourth of 12 teams with 525 points.

The WP men's 400 free relay team of Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka), David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) finished seventh in the A Final with a time of 3:15.91.

Karas was fourth in the 100 free A Final (46.85) and Kevin Thomas (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) was sixth in the 200 back C Final (2:12.54). In the 1,650 free, Caputo touched seventh (17:20.61), Danny Lynch (Rockaway, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) finished ninth (17:53.73) and Ed Lawrence (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) was 17th (18:57.58). Smith swam to a fourth-place finish in the B Final of the 200 breast (2:23.63), while Alex Burdi (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) was sixth in the C Final (2:39.00). In the 200 fly, Lynch was third (2:10.64) and Sean Hernandez (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) was sixth (2:39.00) in the C Final.

On the women's side, the 400 free relay of Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton), Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), Donivyn Schmidt (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) and Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) placed seventh in the A Final with a time of 3:45.97.

Individually, Rotondo was .03 second off a school record in the 200 breast, finishing sixth in the B Final with a time of 2:33.88. Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) was fifth in the three-meter dive A Final (263.91), Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) touched 15th in the 1,650 free (19:45.63), and Hartwell was fourth in the 100 free C Final (56.20). In the 200 back, McKay won the B Final (2:13.43), while Katelyn Esposito (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) was sixth and Tara Graham (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) was seventh (2:31.02) in the C Final. Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) placed fifth in the 200 breast C Final (2:38.84), and Kirsten Shea (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) was fourth in the 200 fly C Final (2:31.20).
