Karas' Seventh-Place Finish Leads WP Men on Day Two of Mets

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) advanced to two individual A Finals, and sophomore Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) reached another men's A Final, as William Paterson competed at Day Two of the Metropolitan Championships Feb. 23 at Rutgers' Sonny Werblin Center. William Paterson's women stand sixth of 17 teams (164 points) after the second day, and the men are ninth of 14 teams with 110 points.

McKay finished fourth in the 100 back (1:00.58) and seventh in the 100 fly (59.81) to lead the women's efforts. In addition to her individual swims, she joined teammates Katelyn Esposito (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.), Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton), and Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) on the 200 medley relay team that touched fourth in the A Final with a time of 1:52.43. Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock), Esposito and Donivyn Schmidt (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) were part of a ninth-place 800 free relay team (8:49.74).

In the 400 IM, freshman Kirsten Shea (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) was eighth in the B Final (5:09.19), while Horowitz was third in the C Final (5:09.36). Hartwell placed fourth in the 200 free B Final (2:03.51), and Schmidt was sixth in the C Final (2:09.35). Rotondo placed fourth in the 100 breast B Final (1:11.11) and Lyon was fifth in the C Final (1:14.44), while Esposito added a third-place finish in the 100 back B Final (1:02.98).

Karas touched seventh in the 200 free A Final with a time of 1:44.09. He also led off a 200 medley relay that was second in the B Final (1:42.34), along with Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) and Kevin Thomas (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City). David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), Lucas Hopper (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Thomas and Danny Lynch (Rockaway, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) placed eighth in the 800 free relay (7:43.11).

In the 400 IM, Caputo was third in the B Final (4:26.43), Lynch was sixth in the B Final (4:31.72), and Ed Lawrence (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) was eighth in the C Final (5:02.19). Smith added a third-place finish in the C Final of the 100 breast (1:04.00).

The Pioneers will finish competition at the Metropolitan Championships Feb. 24.
