WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Shelley Gibney scored a pair of goals as No. 24 Richard Stockton (17-2-1, 8-1 NJAC) wrapped up the women's soccer regular season with a 4-1 victory at William Paterson (10-5-1, 4-4-1 NJAC) Oct. 29.
The Ospreys have clinched the top seed, and with it, a first-round bye for the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament. The Pioneers will be the sixth seed, and will play at third-seeded The College of New Jersey during the first round Saturday, Nov. 1.
Although William Paterson controlled most of the first 25 minutes of its Senior Night, it was Richard Stockton that found the back of the net twice during that opening stretch. Junior Laura O'Shea started the scoring in the ninth minute, intercepting a poor clear, dribbling into the box and pulling out WP goalkeeper
Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) to clear the net for her shot. Sophomore Kim Mancini helped make it a 2-0 score in the 25th minute, sending a ball across the goal face after a broken corner play, one that Gibney finished at the back post.
The Pioneers got one of the goals back during the 39th minute when senior
Amanda Kurdyla (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) finished a give-and-go play with freshman
Sophie Hart-Ruderman (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia). For Kurdyla, it was her 16th goal of the year, the 66th of her career and increased her career points total to 149.
Gibney's ball played to the post after a broken corner play fooled Baker, and rolled across the line for a 3-1 Osprey advantage in the 51st minute. Sophomore Samantha Bean finished the scoring in the 80th minute, turning and shooting from the center of the box off a pass from Lindsay Roake.
Baker made four saves for William Paterson, while senior Alex Rogers had one stop for Stockton.
Prior to the match, the Pioneers honored their seven seniors –
Dana Bertoli (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), Kelly Bray (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), Natale Buongiorno (Northvale, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan), Samantha Flynn (Lindenwold, N.J./Lindenwold), Alyssa George (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls), Kurdyla and
Alyssa Tinari (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan).
