Tennis Competes at NJAIAW Tournament

Heidi Busch reached the third round of Flight C at the NJAIAW Tournament.

MADISON, N.J. – The William Paterson women's tennis team competed at the NJAIAW Tournament Oct. 11 at Drew University, and a pair of Pioneers reached the third round.

After receiving a first-round bye in Flight B, senior Joanna Jakobik (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) defeated teammate Delnaz Shalforoosh (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) in the second round, 8-3. Jakobik later fell to Monmouth's Jessica Slinger in the third round, 2-8.

Junior Heidi Busch (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Regional) defeated Drew's Cathy Jacobs, 8-4, in the second round of Flight C following a first-round bye. She later lost to Kristin Brown of Drew, 3-8, in the third round.

Senior Rachel Menzzopane (Neptune, N.J./Neptune), after a first-round bye, lost to Nicole Rubinetti (Rutgers-Newark), 0-8, in the second round and Lisette LaForge (Kean), 4-8, in the consolation round of Flight A. Junior Lisa Varacallo (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) also had a bye during the first round of Flight A, followed by a 0-8 loss to Monmouth's Sarah Ragan in the second round, and a 2-7 defeat against Drew's Sarah Cronholm in the consolation round.

Shalforoosh dropped her Flight B consolation match against Miriam Penafiel, 0-8.

Playing in Flight C, freshman Kimberly Seabeck (Montague, N.J./Port Jervis) had a first-round bye, lost to Britany Dupuis (Monmouth) in the second round, 4-8, and fell to Ying Fan (Princeton) in the consolation, 6-8. 

In Flight D, Stavroula Ploumitsakos (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Twp.) lost to Wanze Li (Rutgers-Newark) in the first round, 6-8, and Kim Kimpton (Kean) in the consolation, 6-8. Meghan Crampton (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) dropped a 6-8 decision against Maria Miranda of Kean in the first round, and a 6-8 match against Rebecca Olderman of Drew in the consolation round.

The Pioneers will play at Kean Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 3:30 p.m.
