Pioneers Come from Behind for 123-115 Win against Queens

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson swimming and diving teams returned to action Jan. 23, sweeping Queens College at Wightman Pool.
 
William Paterson's women (10-1) came from behind for a 123-115 win. Junior Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) was one of three double winners, racing to victories in the 50 (26.22) and 100 (57.14) frees. Classmate Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) touched first in the 200 IM (2:24.6) and 200 back (2:21.5), while sophomore Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) won the one-meter required (123.35) and optional (162.9) dives. Freshman Kirsten Shea (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) added a win in the 200 fly (2:42.2).

The Pioneer men (7-2) earned a 110-50 victory. Sophomore Danny Lynch (Rockaway, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was a triple winner for William Paterson, touching first in the 1,000 free (11:05), 200 fly (2:23.1) and 500 free (5:29). Sophomore Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) was first in the 200 free (1:54.71) and 200 back (2:11.75), while freshman Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) won the 50 (22.7) and 100 (52.1) frees. Sophomore Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) touched first in the 200 IM (2:16.0) and 200 breast (2:31.4), and junior Michael O'Shea (Edgewater, N.J./Leonia) was the winner of the one-meter required (137.0) and optional (179.9) dives.
  
The Pioneers will return to competition Saturday, Jan. 26, at Stevens Tech at 1:00 p.m.
