BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Senior Tamara Miller (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) posted the second-highest single-match service aces total in NCAA Division III history as the William Paterson volleyball team (6-0) earned a pair of victories at the New York City Tech Tournament Sept. 8.
Miller had 29 aces as the Pioneers defeated City Tech in the first match of the day, 30-3, 30-4 and 30-4. The record for most aces in a three-game match (using the current 30-point game scoring rules) is 36, set by Concordia's Liz Brewer in a match against Mt. Senario on Sept. 8, 2001. The record for a four-game match is 21 aces, and the standard for a five-game match is 19, meaning that Miller's effort is the second-highest service aces total in the history of Division III volleyball.
“Tamara had great placement today on her serves,” said 29th-year WP head coach Sandy Ferrarella. “She mixed it up short and long, and hit every seam on the court today.”
Senior Dana Hansen (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) added 11 aces to her 11 assists against City Tech, and sophomore Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) led WP with six kills.
William Paterson finished the day with a 3-0 victory against Poly Tech (30-26, 30-27, 30-23). Helfrich had 11 kills and 14 digs, Miller posted 10 kills and 11 digs, and Hansen collected 16 assists. Sophomore Samantha Reed (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) led the backrow players with 21 digs.
The Pioneers will begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Tuesday, Sept. 11, at home against New Jersey City at 7:00 p.m.
