WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (1-1) recorded their first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Wilkes (0-2) in the final round of the La Quinta Inn Cup on Sept. 1 at the Pioneer Soccer Park.
The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead when freshman forward
Danny Kusnic (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) found the back of the net off a cross by sophomore
Jonathan Donado (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) in the 10th minute.
Donado furthered William Paterson's lead in the 65th minute when he finished a string of headers from Kusnic and freshman defender
Gary Barrell (Kent, England/The Towers School).
Senior goalkeeper
David Casper (Franklin, N.J./Timothy Christian) made four saves for the Pioneers, including a diving stop of a penalty kick awarded to the Colonels in 60th minute of play. The penalty kick was taken by sophomore forward Greg Miller, who was unable to find the back of the net despite a low shot placed to the right corner.
“It was rewarding to get our first victory,” said 16th-year head coach
Brian Woods. “The team played well and I thought they deserved a victory after all of the hard work of preseason.”
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at home against Baruch at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to the Stockton Seashore Classic on Sept. 7-8.
