Pioneers Defeat Concordia, Hendrix

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The William Paterson softball team (5-3) won its first two outings at the Rebel Spring Games March 13 in Kissimmee, Fla., defeating Concordia (Wisc.) 5-4 and Hendrix (Ark.) 11-0.

The Pioneers got on the board immediately against Concordia, scoring two runs in the first inning. Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) singled, and Kaitlyn Lang (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock-North) reached on an error. Jessica Reibis (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) scored Reilly with a single, followed by an RBI single by Alicia Albert (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).

William Paterson tacked on three runs in the fourth. Albert got on base thanks to an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored thanks to a Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) single. Ana Abourashed (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) smacked a pinch-hit double to plate Winkelspecht, followed by a Jamie Fields (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) single and Christine Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) RBI single.

Junior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) pitched the first five innings for the victory, and was relieved by freshman Daniell Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) in the sixth .

Against Hendrix, freshman Amy Sievert (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out three batters for the shutout victory. The Pioneers did most of their damage in the second inning, scoring seven runs. Fields started things with a run-scoring double, Winkelspecht knocked in a run with a single, Abourashed chipped in an RBI single, Lang plated two runs with a single, Reilly came home on a double steal, and Albert knocked in the final run with a triple.

The Pioneers received 19 votes (26th) in the first NFCA Top 25 Poll of the season (March 8).
