PHOENIX, Ariz. – Eight Pioneers registered multiple hits as the William Paterson baseball team (3-2-1) won its third straight game, defeating Wheaton (1-2-1) 15-4 March 13 at the Greater Phoenix (Ariz.) Invitational.
Senior Rick Pignatello (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) led the offensive outburst with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate, scoring three runs while knocking in two. Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, N.J./Suffern), Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) and Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) each had three hits for the Pioneers, who scored 15 runs on 21 total hits, including four doubles and a home run by Jon Marzella (Cedar Knolls, N.J./Seton Hall Prep).
Senior Mike Irwin (North Haldeon, N.J./Manchester) picked up the victory, throwing 5.0 innings and surrendering six hits and one earned run while striking out six batters. Senior Christian Miranda (Bogota, N.J./Bergen Catholic) hurled the middle two innings, allowing just one hit, while Reinertsen closed out the game, striking out four while walking two without a hit in 2.0 innings.
The Pioneers will play Roger Williams Wednesday, March 14, at 12:30 p.m. (local time) in Phoenix.
