Pioneers Finish Seasons at Met Championships

Jessica Lyon was fourth in the “B” Final of the 200 breaststroke (2:34.42).
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Vojtech Karas' (Brno, Czech Republic/Luduika Danka) fourth-place effort in the 100 freestyle highlighted the William Paterson swimming and diving teams' efforts as the Pioneers finished their seasons at the Metropolitan Championships Feb. 18 at Rutgers' Sonny Werblin Center.

The Pioneer women finished seventh of 20 teams with 450 points, while the men were eighth of 16 schools with 408.5 points.

Karas posted a time of 47.19 in the 100 free, adding to his previous results in the 50 free (sixth, 21.66) and 200 free (eighth, 1:47.35). Freshman Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) led the women's individual efforts on Day Three of the Mets, placing fifth in the one-meter dive (241.50).

David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) was 12th in the 1,650 free (17:44.54), while Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) was fourth in the “B” Final of the 200 breaststroke (2:34.42). Colleen Takemoto (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) touched fifth in the “B” Final of the 200 butterfly (2:23.13), Joe Schirrman (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) tied for fifth in the 100 freestyle “B” Final (49.32), Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) placed sixth in the “B” Final of the 100 free (55.81), and Grace McKay (Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn) finished eighth in the 200 backstroke “B” Final (2:22.65). Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was second in the “C” Final of the 200 breaststroke (2:24.11) and Emily Buhler (Mays Landing, N.J./Holy Spirit) placed third in the 200 fly “C” Final (2:32.84).

Both the men's and women's 400 freestyle relays finished seventh in the “A” Finals. The women's team of Traci Dombrowski (Union, N.J./Union), Donivyn Schmidt (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills), Melanie Mejias (Union, N.J./Union) and Hartwell posted a time of 3:49.05, while the men's side of Karas, Caputo, Brian Fisher (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) and Schirrman had a time of 3:18.63.
