Pellichero Scores Career-High 27 Points

Michelle Pellichero's career-high 27 points were not enough as WP lost to Union, 66-62.

Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – A Rachel Ormsby basket with 56 seconds remaining, and a pair of Rachel Scott free throws, gave the Union women's basketball team (1-0) a 66-62 victory at William Paterson (1-2) in the first round of the Red Hawk/Pioneer Classic Nov. 24.

A Michelle Pellichero (Milltown, N.J./Bishop Ahr) 18-footer on the right wing tied the score at 60-60 with 1:52 on the clock, but Michelle Rogers knocked in a spinning layup at the other end, pushing the Dutchwomen ahead by two (62-60, 1:28). Junior Asia Johnson (Wildwood, N.J./Wildwood) drained an eight-footer, again deadlocking the contest (62-62, 1:14), but Ormsby answered with a layup of her own off a Rogers dish, giving Union a 64-62 edge. Sophomore Elisa Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) had a chance to tie the contest during the Pioneers' next possession, but neither one of her free throws would fall, and Scott was able to secure the Dutchwomen's victory with her two successful trips to the stripe with 19 seconds to play.

The game was a close one, as neither team led by more than seven during the 40 minutes, and the two sides traded the lead 11 times during the contest.

Pellichero scored a career-high 27 points in the losing effort, while Johnson posted a career-best 14 rebounds to go along with her 14 points. Brown added team bests of six assists and four steals.

Rogers paced Union with her 13 points, while Maria Tobin had 12 tallies. Devon Ciliberto led the Dutchwomen with 13 rebounds.

William Paterson will take on Arcadia in the second round of the Red Hawk/Pioneer Classic Sunday, Nov. 25, at 1:00 p.m., while Union will face Montclair State at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be played at MSU's Panzer Gymnasium.
