NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The William Paterson men's and women's swimming teams both finished first at the Mount St. Mary Invitational Oct. 28.
The Pioneer women placed first of five teams with 487 points. Junior Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) was the only triple winner of the meet, earning victories in the 50 backstroke (30.62), 100 back (1:07.03) and 50 butterfly (30.52). Junior Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton) touched first in the 200 IM (2:33.46) and 50 breaststroke (33.91), while classmate Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) was a double winner in the 50 (26.37) and 100 (57.49) frees. Freshman Lauren Horowitz (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) won the 500 free (5:55.75), junior Donivyn Schmidt (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) won the 200 free (2:14.91), and senior Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) was first in the 100 IM (1:07.00). The 200 medley relay team of McKay, Lyon, Kirsten Shea (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) and Hartwell won with a time of 2:03.30, while the 200 free relay of Schmidt, Rotondo, Jennifer Birkbeck (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit) and Hartwell posted a winning time of 1:49.83.
The Pioneer men finished first of four teams with 469 points. Sophomore Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) won both the 50 breast (30.82) and 100 IM (1:04.00), while classmate Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) touched first in the 100 free (50.69) and 50 fly (26.54). Junior David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) was a double winner in the 200 (1:58.50) and 500 (5:18.62) frees, freshman Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) won the 50 free (23.55) and 100 breast (1:10.91), and freshman Andrew Scimeca (Lincoln Park, N.J./Morris County School of Tech) touched first in the 50 back (33.21). The 200 free relay team of Karas, Caputo, Smith and Seftel won with a time of 1:37.31.
The Pioneer women will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 30, at St. Joseph's-Long Island at 7:00 p.m. The William Paterson men and women will later compete at Drew Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1:00 p.m.
