Swimmers Fall in Season Opener to Profs

Sophomore Vojtech Karas came from behind for a pair of wins in the 200 free (1:48.39) and the 100 fly (56.40).

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's and women's swimming and diving teams (0-1) began the 2007-08 season with a pair of hard-fought losses to visiting Rowan (1-0) Oct. 25.

The Pioneer men lost to the Profs, 141-97. Junior David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) was a double winner, earning victories in the 1,000 (10:49.66) and 500 (5:11.64) frees. Sophomore Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) came from behind for a pair of wins in the 200 free (1:48.39) and the 100 fly (56.40). Freshman Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) was impressive in his collegiate debut, posting times of 23.37 in the 50 free, and 52.04 in the 100 free. Sophomore Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) touched the wall in 2:09.36 in the 200 IM, and 1:06.81 in the 100 breast.

The Profs won the women's dual, 131-99. Sophomore Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) won the one-meter (172.35) and three-meter (154.20) dives to lead the Pioneers. Junior Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) touched second in the 50 (26.28) and 100 (57.17) frees. Junior Caitlin Rotondo (Brick, N.J./Methacton) posted a time of 1:14.11 in the 100 breast, Casey Eustace (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) was second in the three-meter dive (85.95), and Jessica Lyon (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) had a time of 1:14.69 in the 100 breast. The 200 freestyle relay team of Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), Donivyn Schmidt (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills), Jennifer Birkbeck (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit) and Rotondo posted a time of 1:49.98.

The Pioneers will return to action Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Mount St. Mary Invitational at 11:00 a.m.
