Pioneers Sweep Queens

Freshman Kirk Smith was the swimmer of the meet for William Paterson, earning victories in the 200 IM (2:11.67) and 200 breaststroke (2:35.95).
FLUSHING, N.Y. – The William Paterson swimming and diving teams earned a sweep at Queens Jan. 24, with the men (6-3) winning by a score of 118-74, and the women (9-2) triumphing, 148-100.

Three Pioneers were individual double-winners on the men's side. Freshman Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was the swimmer of the meet for William Paterson, earning victories in the 200 IM (2:11.67) and 200 breaststroke (2:35.95). Sophomore David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) touched first in the 500 (5:21) and 1,000 (11:02) frees, while freshman Vojtech Karas (Brno, Czech Republic/Luduika Danka) was first in the 100 (49.96) and 200 (1:56.6) frees. Freshman Joe Shirrman (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) won the 50 free (23.13), senior Angel Camacho (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) touched first in the 200 fly (2:21.84), sophomore Michael O'Shea (Edgewater, N.J./Leonia) placed first in the one-meter optional dive (186.30), and senior Sean Davenport (Highland Lakes, N.J./Vernon Twp.) earned the victory in the one-meter required dive (136.95).


Sophomore Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) led three Pioneer double-winners on the women's side, finishing first in the 50 (26.55) and 100 (57.38) frees. Junior Jessica Lyon (Pequannock , N.J. / Pequannock) won the 200 IM (2:26.4) and 200 breaststroke (2:38.14), while freshman Giana Albruzzese (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) earned victories in the one-meter required (131.95) and optional (168.95) dives. Senior ColleenTakemoto (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) had the swim of the meet, posting a time of 2:22.77 in the 200 fly to take nearly four seconds off her finish from Jan. 20. The 400 freestyle relay of Grace McKay (Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn) , Donivyn Schmidt (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills), Melanie Mejias (Union, N.J./Union) and Traci Dombrowski (Union, N.J./Union) broke the four-minute barrier for the first time this season (3:59.64), and McKay, Lyon, Takemoto and Hartwell gave the Pioneers the win in the 400 medley relay (4:21.24).

The William Paterson women will next compete Friday, Jan. 26, at John Jay at 6:00 p.m., while the men will host NJIT Saturday, Jan. 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Wightman Gym. The men's meet against the Highlanders will mark the final home contest of the season for the Pioneers.
