Luci Custis (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) became the 17th member of the Pioneers' 1,000-point club as the William Paterson women's basketball team (2-1) ran past New York City Tech (1-2) 96-52 Nov. 21 in WPU's home opener at the Rec Center.
Custis reached the milestone more than halfway through the first half, scoring her 18 th point of the game after a 22-2 run that blew the game open for the Pioneers (28-6, 12:27). William Paterson took a 56-23 lead into the locker room, shooting a sizzling 57.1 (20-35) percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
The Pioneers continued to build upon their lead after the break, as turnovers continued to plague the Yellow Jackets in the second half. In all, City Tech's 34 total turnovers resulted in 45 points for the Pioneers.
Luci Custis finished the contest with 22 points, bringing her career total to 1,004, and made nine of 11 (.818) field goals. Junior
Lori Custis (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) added 12 tallies, while freshman 5-7 guard
Elisa Brown (Norwalk, Conn./ Norwalk) pitched in with 10 tallies. Junior 5-4 guard
Michelle Pellichero (Milltown, N.J./Bishop Ahr) directed the offense, dishing a team-best six assists.
The Pioneers will host the first day of the Montclair State/William Paterson Classic Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Rec Center. The Red Hawks will face Colby at 1:00 p.m., followed by WPU and Bowdoin at 3:00 p.m.
