WPU Women First, Men Second at Mount Saint Mary

Kirk Smith placed first in the 50 (30.6) and 100 (1:07.93) breaststrokes at the Mount St. Mary Invitational.
NEWBURGH, N.Y. (OCTOBER 29, 2006) – The William Paterson women's and men's swimming and diving teams finished first and second, respectively, at the Mount Saint Mary Invitational Oct. 29.

The women (511) placed first of seven teams, ahead of Elms (237), St. Joseph's Patchogue (231), Mount Saint Mary (153), Mount Saint Vincent (111), SUNY Maritime (88) and Old Westbury (11).

Sophomore Grace McKay (Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn) won three events for the Pioneers – the 50 backstroke (29.0), the 100 back (1:04.87) and the 50 fly (28.95). Junior Jessica Lyon (Pequannock , N.J./ Pequannock) took the titles in the 50 breaststroke (33.0) and the 100 medley (1:08.08), while sophomore Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) won the 50 (26.18) and 100 (57.62) freestyles. Senior Traci Dombrowski (Union, N.J./Union) finished first in the 500 (5:52.13) and 200 (2:10.68) freestyles, and senior Colleen Takemoto (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) was the winner in the 100 fly (1:05.6). The Pioneer 200 medley relay of McKay, Lyon, Takemoto and Hartwell also was a winner, posting a time of 1:58.59, and Dombrowski, Kathy Borrero (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), Melanie Mejias (Union, N.J./Union) and Donivyn Schmidt (Mansfield, N.J./Warren Hills) won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:51.18.

The William Paterson men (356) were second of five teams, trailing SUNY Maritime (359) and ahead of Mount Saint Mary (244), Elms (104) and Old Westbury (48).

Sophomore David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) won the 200 (1:55.77) and 500 (5:18.00) freestyles, while freshman Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) placed first in the 50 (30.6) and 100 (1:07.93) breaststrokes, to lead the Pioneers. Stefan Rosales ( Rahway, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen), Smith, Angel Camacho (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) and Joe Shirrman (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) won the 200 medley relay (1:48.25), and Caputo, Brian Fischer (Forked River, N.J./Laley Twp.), Todd Correia (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) and Shirrman took the title in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.12).

The Pioneers will host their first meet of the season Friday, Nov. 3, taking on Stevens Tech at 6:00 p.m. at Wightman Gym.
