Pioneers Open Seasons at Rowan

Voytech Karas was a double winner, taking the 200 freestyle (1:48.04) and the 100 butterfly (55.91) races.
GLASSBORO, N.J. (OCTOBER 28, 2006) – The William Paterson men's and women's swimming and diving teams began their 2006-07 seasons at Rowan Oct. 28. The Pioneer men fell to the Profs, 178-65, while the women lost, 164-66.

Freshmen Voytech Karas (Morris Plains, N.J.) was a double winner, taking the 200 freestyle (1:48.04) and the 100 butterfly (55.91) races. Classmate Joe Schirrman (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) finished first in the 50 free (22.72) and was third in the 100 free (51.03), while sophomore David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) was third in the 1,000 freestyle (11:07.42) and second in the 500 free (5:14.83).

Junior Jessica Lyon (Pequannock , N.J. / Pequannock) led the WPU women, placing third in both the 200 IM (2:27.27) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.36). Sophomore Grace McKay (Fairlawn, N.J./Fairlawn) finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.86), senior Colleen Takemoto (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) was third in the 100 butterfly (1:06.48), and sophomore Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) was third in the 100 free (57.28). Junior Jamie Hopper (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) won the one-meter diving competition with 154.43 points.

The Pioneers will compete at the Mt. St. Mary Invitational Sunday, Oct. 29, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
