Following the loss of four of its six top singles players from a year ago, the 2010 season should be one of rebuilding for the William Paterson tennis program.
The Pioneers return just four players with college-level experience from a 2009 squad that posted a 4-7 record. Fourth-year head coach
Mary Lou Rios will be counting on her five newcomers to step up and fill out the WP lineup.
Sophomore
Sonja Pedersen (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) is expected to play at first singles this fall, a year after she registered a pair of wins in both third singles and first doubles as a freshman. She will be followed by freshman
Mary Skretkowicz (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) at second singles, and senior
Delnaz Shalforoosh (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Demarest), who posted seven total victories while playing primarily at fourth singles and second doubles in 2009.
Freshmen
Justine Lawson (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional) and
Maris Ferreira (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) are projected as the fourth and fifth singles players, respectively. Completing the lineup should be senior
Evelyn Tam (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech), who returns to the Pioneers after competing at fifth singles and second doubles during the 2008 campaign.
William Paterson's doubles combinations will likely be Skretkowicz and Shalforoosh at first, Pedersen and Lawson at second, and Ferreira and Tam at third. Working to break into the lineup are freshmen
Nadia Abarca (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and
Stephanie Erazo (Newark, N.J./Technology).
