PITMAN, N.J. – William Paterson (26-13-1) will look to successfully defend its 2009 title when the Pioneers begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament play at Rowan (26-11) Tuesday, May 4, at 4:00 p.m.
The fourth-seeded Pioneers will face off against the third-seeded Profs for the second time in just four days. In the regular-season finale for both schools May 1, host William Paterson began the doubleheader with a 2-1, eight-inning win. Rowan battled back to take the night cap, 3-0.
Top-seeded The College of New Jersey (30-6) will host the remainder of the double-elimination tournament Friday-Sunday, May 7-9, at Lions' Park. The winner of the WP/Rowan game will play the winner of the first-round contest between No. 2 Ramapo (27-13) and No. 5 Kean (25-14) on May 7 at 3:00 p.m. The WP/Rowan loser will face the winner of the TCNJ vs. No. 6 Richard Stockton (21-13) first-round contest May 7 at 1:00 p.m. The TCNJ/Stockton loser will play the Ramapo/Kean loser in an elimination game May 7 at 11:00 a.m. The format for May 8-9 will be determined after the conclusion of Friday's contests.
William Paterson took home the 2009 NJAC title after wins against Kean (3-0), TCNJ (14-6, five innings) and Rowan (7-6). The championship series against Montclair State was cancelled due to heavy rain in Glassboro May 3. The Pioneers, undefeated up to that point, would have had to lose twice to the Red Hawks on that day in order for MSU to win the championship. William Paterson went on to advance to the finals series of the NCAA Tournament Mahwah First Round, losing only to the eventual national champions, Messiah College. WP finished its 2009 season with a 35-9 overall record and a 13-5 mark in conference play.
